In the darkness, we see only the light that we ourselves have blocked out. – Martin Luther King Jr.

In the darkness, we see only the light that we ourselves have blocked out. – Martin Luther King Jr.

Once, when I was young and impressionable, I asked a wise old man what it meant to be young and black in a world of old and white. He took my hand, led me to a bright sunlight, and said, “You know, when you’re young and black, in a world of old and white, you often have to find your own light. You have to look outside of yourself, far away from the darkness, and see what the light is like.”

And so, I did. I looked far away from the darkness, and saw the light that was there, waiting for me. And through hard work and dedication, I found my way to a place where I could stand in the sunlight and be proud of who I was.

But it wasn’t always easy. I had to fight for my place in this world, against the power of the darkness. I had to question everything, question the man who had told me what it meant to be young and black in a world of old and white. I had to look inside myself and see what I had to offer, and not be afraid to take it.

And through it all, I found a source of strength that I never thought I would need. In the darkness, we see only the light that we ourselves have blocked out. But when we find our own light, we find a source of strength that we never thought we could harness.

In the darkness, we have to look for our own light. We have to reach out to the light that is there, waiting for us, and draw it closer to us. And when we do, we will find our way out of the darkness, and into a place where we can stand in the sunlight and be proud of who we are.

In the darkness, we see only the light that we ourselves have blocked out. But when we find our own light, we find a source of strength that we never thought we could harness. And that strength will help us navigate the darkness, and find our way to a place where we can be proud of who we are, and who we have become.
